Undertones Aural Memorial

Undertones Aural Memorial

Reclamation of the African Burial Grounds in Richmond, VA The Jazz Arts Consortium (JAC) and NEWMUSIC USA has commissioned composer, pianist, and educator Ashby Anderson to create a dramatic musical work, Undertones: An Aural Memorial, for the African Burial Ground in Richmond, Virginia. For more than 10 years, Richmond’s oldest municipal burial ground for people of African descent had been covered over by a parking lot owned by an area college.

The Historic Richmond Jazz Suite

The Historic Richmond Jazz Suite

The Historic Richmond Jazz Suite is purely my musical statement about things in and around me. The suite took two years to complete. Since all artists need a subject to work with, I chose historical people, places, and events. These subjects have always intrigued me. The folkloric quality of the buried train, the Devil’s Half-Acre, and Gabriel’s Rebellion (not in this musical collection) produce strong emotions and images that deserve attention.

Richmond Youth Jazz Guild

Richmond Youth Jazz Guild

The Richmond Youth Jazz Guild was created in 2008 by jazz composer, pianist and social entrepreneur, Ashby Anderson, as a way to bring Jazz and acoustic instrument playing back into the lives of youth in the metropolitan area. In 2008, Anderson, opened up his studio, Muse Creative Workspace (a 5,000 sq. ft. warehouse equip with grand piano, drum set, and upright bass), to his long time friend for drum lessons for their sons. Within a few months Anderson saw the future of music instruction.

Arguably this nation’s greatest cultural contribution to the world, jazz is inseparably rooted in African American culture. Even jazz composed and performed today proudly celebrates deep-rooted traditions. But its power can reach right into your life when a skilled visionary strays from them. In August of 2006, well-known jazz musician Ashby Anderson and his wife Terri made a wrong turn on a one-way street, and found themselves parked in front of an old produce warehouse at 6 N. 19th St.
